FRIENDS OF VALLEY PLAYLAND REBUILDING PROJECT- GREAT WAY TO GET INVOLVED, AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY!!
SAYRE — Local volunteers in Sayre are lined up to bring a new playground for the borough with a focus on inclusivity and fun. The group Friends of Valley Playland, which leads the initiative, seeks to revitalize what they call a “deteriorated, unsafe play area” into a “vibrant, accessible community space” at 306 W. Lockhart St. The nonprofit was the driving force behind the 2021 construction of Valley Playland in Athens.
The playground would be constructed on a plot formerly owned by the First Citizens Community Bank at the corner of Allison Street and West Lockhart Street. Currently, the plot contains a fenced-in park space with benches and an aging swingset.
“It’ll be like a miniature version of what was done in Athens,” Lori Unger, president of Friends of Valley Playland. “We really think it’ll be an improvement to Sayre Borough, which doesn’t currently have any public playgrounds outside of what’s available at the schools.”
A preliminary rendering for the playground contains a swath of playground staples and attractions such as swings, monkey bars, a ring and tightrope course, various slides, a rocker and spinner. The primary structure, containing slides, a fire pole and more, is proposed to resemble a steam locomotive and train station, tying the effort with the history of the area’s early growth along the Lehigh Valley Railroad line.
Unger says the organization is working with Play By Design, an Ithaca-based playground consulting firm, to design and construct the project.
The project is estimated to cost about $300,000 and is targeted for completion in summer 2027. Funding is being sought through grants, such as the CFA Local Share Account Statewide Program, and local fundraising efforts. The Bradford County Board of Commissioners approved a letter of support for the initiative in their meeting last week, bolstering the grant-seeking efforts for the project.
Following construction, Sayre Borough is set to become the owner and maintainer of the property.
Futurescapes will be looking for many volunteers to help with building the new playground. If you can help, please email your information to friendsofvalleyplayland@gmail.com or politilinda@gmail.com.

Over 25 years ago, a very dedicated group of community volunteers constructed the Valley Playland. It has served the families of the Valley well and, as a community-built project, is a source of pride for the Valley. Futurescapes has focused on ways to make Valley Playland a safe and accessible destination that can continue to serve families into the future.
